Citizen of the Year Awards Banquet
June 6, 2008 — All of Roanoke was alive tonight as the Roanoke Branch, NAACP hosted its tenth annual Citizen of the Year Awards Banquet. Five hundred patrons and supporters congregated in the Hotel Roanoke and Conference Center to be inspired and motivated. Those in attendance were treated to a program that educated and entertained. Truly, it was a grand evening.
I would like to thank our sponsors for providing our NAACP branch the ability to offer you a fantastic educational opportunity. Internationally acclaimed, Pulitzer Prize-winning syndicated author, Leonard Pitts, gave tremendous insight to the problem of race and our ability to talk about and deal with the issue of race. We, and all who attended, were certainly blessed. Mr. Pitts’ message did energize us, and helped create a synergy that will continue to grow. This ground-swell will provide momentum for this branch to continue on its mission: to work for the civil rights of all and continue the fight for justice.
We congratulate the recipients of this year’s Citizen of the Year awards. These people epitomize what the NAACP stands for in this community. I know that the recipients certainly appreciate the support many of you have offered. Please continue that support of their efforts.
Finally, I want to ask each of you (if you are not members already) to help us to continue to be America’s leading civil rights organization. Please consider becoming an active member of the Roanoke Branch, NAACP. Your participation in working for the rights of all would be most welcome. You can complete the membership application online and join the ranks of Julian Bond, Andrew Young, and, yes, even Leonard Pitts. It is time that your name joins the ranks of those who have diligently toward justice for all.
Sincerely,
Daniel M. Hale, Jr.President, Roanoke Branch, NAACP
